Mrs. Larissa Filipsen

Resource Teacher
Eleven years at Holy Trinity Catholic School

Education:  Bachelors of Science in Psychology with an English major and a social studies minor                        from Pittsburg State University

Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Missouri, Kansas City

Work Experience:  I had the pleasure of teaching middle school for 18 years. During those years, I taught every subject expect math.  I also taught fifth grade for 2 years early in my career.  Six years ago I had the chance to move to the resource room where I have the opportunity to teach K-8th students.  I focus primarily on reading and math, but can (and often do) work with any student on any subject.

Teaching Philosophy:  I believe that the most important aspect of teaching is teaching students to want to learn.  A student’s desire to learn is paramount to their ability to mastering new concepts and skills.  All students can learn; it’s my job to help them figure out how they learn best.  I work to convince them they can learn perhaps just differently than their peers.  I differentiate my instruction to meet the needs of all the students. Learning is a life-long skill, and I want to encourage that passion in all of our students.

Passions and Interests:  I love to read, especially mysteries and nonfiction.  My four children and husband keep me busy!  I spend time baking, and I also play the viola and piano.

Favorite Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, for as much as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
